Stock Market Ends Week on a High as Investors Drive Surge in Turnover

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi
Ghana’s stock market closed the week of November 17–21 on a bullish note, fuelled by rising investor participation, strong turnover and heavy activity in banking, telecom and energy counters. All major indices advanced across the five trading sessions, signaling a solid rebound in confidence.
A Market Strengthening With Each Session
The week opened in steady fashion with the GSE Composite Index at 8,414.15 on Monday. By Friday, the index had climbed to 8,521.02, adding more than 106 points in just five days. Market capitalization followed the same upward trajectory, increasing from GH¢165.54 billion to GH¢166.87 billion as investors broadened their exposure across sectors.
Trading volumes also strengthened. More than nine million shares exchanged hands over the week, generating turnover in excess of GH¢71 million. Mid-week and closing sessions recorded the highest value traded, driven by sizeable block transactions. The rally reinforces the GSE’s impressive 74.31 percent year-to-date growth.
Financial stocks carried the market upward, with the GSE Financial Stocks Index rising from 4,332.88 to 4,349.86. Analysts say institutional investors are repositioning ahead of full-year financial results, especially within the banking segment.
Turnover Builds Momentum Across the Week
Monday set a stable foundation with a little over one million shares traded. Activity picked up sharply on Tuesday with 1.75 million shares. Wednesday saw a jump in value traded despite roughly two million shares, as high-value deals pushed the market strongly upward.
Thursday maintained the pace with 1.7 million shares and robust enthusiasm for bank equities. But Friday delivered the climax, registering nearly 2.5 million shares at a value of GH¢31.2 million—cementing the week as one of the most liquid in the quarter.
Friday’s Standout Movers Round Off a Vibrant Week
GCB Bank dominated Friday’s trading after surging 50 pesewas to GH¢19.00, with more than 1.39 million shares changing hands. Fund managers appear to be increasing exposure to the lender as a defensive pick heading into year-end.
GOIL advanced 7 pesewas to GH¢2.75 on renewed confidence in the petroleum marketer’s fundamentals. Cal Bank edged up by one pesewa to 36 pesewas, while MTN Ghana inched to GH¢4.20, retaining its place as the market’s liquidity driver. Ecobank Ghana closed marginally higher at GH¢19.02; Fan Milk slipped to GH¢8.00, and TotalEnergies dropped to GH¢40.41.
Cautious Optimism Shapes the Outlook
Analysts expect December to remain active as investors factor in upcoming earnings, dividend expectations and year-end portfolio realignment. With liquidity improving and demand broad-based across major sectors, sentiment heading into the final month of the year remains cautiously upbeat.
