The Black Stars suffered a 1-0 defeat to the ‘Asian Tigers’, but Asare’s impressive display in goal has stolen the spotlight, strengthening his case for the starting spot ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Asare had missed Ghana’s 2-0 loss to Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup due to a late arrival to camp, sparking doubts about his ability to handle high-pressure situations against top-tier opponents. However, Tuesday’s match provided the perfect opportunity for him to silence critics, and he delivered a commanding performance.
The 33-year-old made several decisive saves, including a crucial penalty stop, keeping Ghana in the game throughout. His assured handling, lightning-quick reflexes, and dominance in the penalty area will have undoubtedly caught the attention of coach Otto Addo, especially given the absence of key defenders like Mohammed Salisu and Alexander Djiku.
Despite the Black Stars’ narrow defeat, Asare’s outstanding display has confirmed his readiness for the number one role as Ghana prepares for the World Cup.
