Ethiopia Set to Host COP32 in 2027 after Securing Continental Backing

Ethiopia is on course to host the 2027 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32), following broad agreement among negotiators at the ongoing climate talks to endorse Addis Ababa as the venue.

Delegates are expected to give formal approval at a scheduled plenary, but diplomatic sources indicate that the African Group of Negotiators backed Ethiopia’s bid unanimously. The strong regional endorsement is understood to have tilted the process decisively in Addis Ababa’s favour, ahead of Nigeria, which was also in contention.

If ratified, COP32 will mark Ethiopia’s first time hosting the global conference and only the third occasion the event will take place on African soil. Analysts say the choice points to a growing acknowledgement of Africa’s disproportionate exposure to climate risks and the need to elevate the continent’s priorities in global climate governance.

The summit is projected to draw several thousand participants, including heads of state, ministers, climate activists, development organisations and international media. Ethiopian authorities are expected to embark on extensive logistical preparations to accommodate the scale of the event.

Head of Climate Adaptation & Resilience Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)  note that bringing COP32 to Addis Ababa could amplify Africa’s collective stance on key issues, “particularly on issues such as loss and damage financing and the operationalisation of climate commitments made to developing nations.”

Observers argue that Africa has long advocated for greater fairness in climate financing, clearer accountability for emission commitments, and robust support for adaptation and renewable energy transitions. Hosting the conference, they say, offers an opportunity to reinforce these demands at a decisive global platform.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is anticipated to release an official confirmation in the coming days.
