Gov’t uncaps NHIL to add GH₵3.4bn to National Health Insurance Fund
The Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has disclosed that the government’s decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) will generate an additional GHS3.4 billion for the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) by the end of 2025.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ conference organised by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in Accra, Mr Debrah said the move by the Mahama administration is aimed at ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of the national health insurance scheme.
“Ten months into our administration, I am pleased to report that we have already uncapped the National Health Insurance Levy, which will make available an extra GHS3.4 billion into the fund this year,” he announced.
Mr Debrah explained that the measure will help clear outstanding claims, strengthen administrative efficiency, and maintain financial stability within the scheme.
He further revealed that GHS2.8 billion has already been disbursed this year to healthcare providers, a move that has boosted confidence in the system, encouraged compliance, and spurred enrolment growth.
According to him, the initiative, together with the Mahama Cares Programme, underscores the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and enhancing citizens’ well-being.
Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, described the policy as “unprecedented.”
He said the additional funds have enabled the Authority to pay service providers monthly, marking a major shift from the previous system that saw long delays and arrears in payments.
