Daddy Lumba’s final funeral rites set for Dec 6

The final funeral rites of highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, have been scheduled for 6 December 2025 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, according to an announcement by the station founded by the late musician.
Daddy Lumba passed away on 26 July 2025 at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness, aged 60. His passing plunged the nation into mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the world.
Musicians, fans and political figures, including current and former presidents, hailed him as a cultural icon whose music shaped generations and defined an era of Ghanaian highlife.
Following his death, the Creative Arts Agency, in collaboration with the Fosu family, organised a national candlelight vigil on 2 August 2025 at Independence Square in Accra.
The solemn event, which drew thousands of fans, friends and fellow artistes, ran from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and was simultaneously observed in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands and other parts of Ghana.
A one-week memorial service was later held on 30 August 2025, also at Independence Square. The gathering featured performances of Lumba’s timeless songs and emotional tributes from family, industry colleagues and government officials, all highlighting his remarkable influence on Ghana’s music and culture.
The upcoming funeral in Kumasi, his home region, is expected to draw thousands of mourners from Ghana and abroad. The Baba Yara Stadium, one of the largest venues in the country, has been chosen to accommodate the anticipated crowds of fans, dignitaries and industry players who wish to pay their final respects.
The family of the late musician, together with the Creative Arts Agency and representatives from the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), are finalising preparations for what is expected to be a grand farewell befitting one of Ghana’s most beloved musical legends.
In a statement, the family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support since his passing, adding that details of the burial, thanksgiving service and commemorative concerts will be announced in due course.
“Lumba’s life was a gift to Ghana and to the world. His music gave voice to the soul of the people, and though he is gone, his melodies will live forever,” the statement added.
