World Cup qualifiers: Black Stars set to spend $1.12m on CAR, Comoros matches

By Victor Kwawu

The Black Stars’ match budgets have been a topic of controversy, especially after the Ministry of Sports and Recreation slashed the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) proposed budget for the World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali.

The government approved USD1.32 million, a significant reduction of USD732,750 from the GFA’s initial request of USD2.05 million.

The Ministry’s decision to cut the budget was part of the government’s effort to enforce fiscal discipline in national team financing.

In a new development, the Ministry for Sports and Recreation has praised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for its professionalism and cooperation as the Black Stars’ budget for the Central African Republic (CAR) and Comoros 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers awaits final presidential approval.

Sector Minister Kofi Adams stated: “I want to take this opportunity to sincerely appreciate the GFA for its cooperation and the maturity shown throughout this process.

These engagements are often technical and time-sensitive, and the posture of the Association throughout has reflected a shared commitment to proper governance and accountability.”

This renewed spirit of collaboration and dialogue is a positive development, especially after previous controversies surrounding matchday budgets.

The GFA submitted the budget estimates on 18 September to cover the 8 October away fixture against the Central African Republic and the 12 October home match against Comoros, totalling USD1.12 million for travel, accommodation, training, per diems, match bonuses, and other logistical requirements.

Ghana will need four points from the two matches to advance in the qualifiers, highlighting the importance of timely budget approval to ensure proper preparations.
