Police arrest 10 for series of bank robberies

The Ghana Police Service says ten suspects arrested in connection with a string of rural bank robberies across the country will be arraigned before court in the coming days.
Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, disclosed that a total of 15 individuals have been linked to the violent robberies, which occurred in the Ashanti, Central, Eastern, Ahafo and Western Regions.
“All the suspects are in custody and will be put before the court while efforts are intensified to get those at large arrested,” COP Donkor told journalists at a media briefing on Wednesday, 24 September 2025.
She confirmed that two suspects remain at large, while three others were shot dead during gun battles with police.
Investigators say the ten arrested suspects have confessed to participating in several attacks, including a recent assault on the Saint Martins De Porres Cooperative Credit Union.
The 3.30 a.m. robbery on 14 September involved a heavily armed gang that held a security guard and his wife hostage before fleeing with cash. A loaded AK-47 magazine was recovered at the scene.
During the six-month intelligence-led operation, police seized a significant cache of weapons and valuables from the syndicate. Items retrieved include: “3 AK-47 assault rifles; 1 single-barrel gun with 1 AAA ammunition; 7 pump-action guns with 96 rounds of AAA ammunition; 3 Bruni pistols with 40 rounds of ammunition; 1 M&P pistol with 4 rounds of ammunition.
“Cash totalling GHS18,845, USD104, 190 Liberian dollars, ₦5,800 and CFA31,000; A large quantity of assorted Ghanaian coins; 6 vehicles and 4 motorbikes and Several mobile phones and pieces of jewellery
Significantly, one AK-47 rifle bore the marking GH GP/ASH/TEPA/TP/B1523 and had originally been issued to Corporal Francis Adu Yaw of the Tepa District, who was killed by armed robbers on the Bibiani-Goaso highway on 29 November 2024.
“This is an indication that this same gang committed that heinous crime,” COP Donkor stated, highlighting the syndicate’s deadly record.
A manhunt continues for the two remaining fugitives, while prosecutors prepare to bring the arrested suspects before court to face charges ranging from armed robbery to possession of prohibited firearms.
