Mobile money usage remains high with 831m transactions in August

Mobile money usage in Ghana remained robust in August 2025, with transactions totalling GHS354.1 billion, according to the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data.
Although this represents a slight dip from GHS355.4 billion in July, analysts say the figures highlight the continuing dominance of digital payments in the country’s financial landscape.
The total number of mobile money transactions climbed to 831 million in August, up from 778 million in July, reflecting the steady expansion of digital payment activity.
BoG data further show that registered mobile money accounts rose to 77.7 million, with 25.1 million active accounts, marking continued progress in financial inclusion and the growing preference for cashless transactions across Ghana.
Industry experts note that the marginal decline in total value is outweighed by the consistent rise in transaction volumes and active users, a sign of deepening trust in mobile money for everyday purchases, business payments, salary disbursements and remittances.
Cross-network activity also strengthened. Mobile money interoperability, which enables seamless transfers across different service providers, recorded GHS4.9 billion in transaction value in August, supported by 26.4 million cross-network transfers.
Despite currency fluctuations and fiscal pressures in 2025, the sustained momentum of mobile money underscores the resilience of the country’s payment systems.
The BoG has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a secure and competitive digital payments environment, stressing that the growth of mobile money remains critical to Ghana’s broader financial inclusion and economic development goals. Financial technology experts add that mobile money’s popularity is also helping broaden tax collection opportunities and reduce the economy’s dependence on cash.
