GNPC launches 40th anniversary with call for energy innovation

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has officially launched its 40th anniversary celebrations under the theme “From Resource to Reality: 40 Years of Impact and Innovation”, with a high-profile ceremony at the Presidency’s Villa Dome on 15 September 2025.
The milestone event drew Ghana’s top leadership, including the Vice President, Chief of Staff, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, and Senior Presidential Advisors.
Global oil and gas executives from ExxonMobil, the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO), and other international stakeholders also joined the celebration.
In his keynote address, CEO Kwame Ntow Amoah reflected on GNPC’s transformative journey since its establishment in 1985 to secure Ghana’s sovereignty over its petroleum resources.
“What began as a small team with ambitious dreams has grown into a corporation at the centre of Ghana’s economic and industrial development,” he said.
Mr Amoah highlighted the corporation’s resilience in overcoming financial, technical and policy challenges while delivering landmark achievements such as the Jubilee, TEN and Sankofa Gye Nyame discoveries, which ushered Ghana into commercial oil production over the past 15 years.
He recalled GNPC’s pioneering horizontal well drilling in the 1990s, the first of its kind in Africa.
Acknowledging the contributions of GNPC’s workforce and partners, he saluted past and current heads of state, ministers, board members and staff for “believing in Ghana’s energy story and laying the foundation for our future.”
Looking ahead, the CEO stressed GNPC’s readiness to lead in an era of energy transition, digitalisation and sustainability.
“Energy transition is no longer a choice but an imperative,” he said, adding that through President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset and Growth Agenda, GNPC is leveraging new technologies and innovative financing to expand exploration and production.
“As we unveil GNPC at 40, let this moment mark a new chapter where the legacy of the past four decades inspires our ambition to venture into uncharted territories,” Mr Amoah affirmed, outlining a vision to become a leading global oil and gas company by its 50th anniversary.
The launch sets the stage for a year-long programme of activities to celebrate GNPC’s achievements, honour its legacy and chart a bold path forward.
The state-owned company explores, develops and manages Ghana’s petroleum resources, ensuring energy security, promoting sustainable development and positioning Ghana as a competitive player in the global energy industry.
