Fred Amugi calls for return of radio theatre

Veteran Ghanaian actor Fred Amugi has called on stakeholders in the creative arts industry to revive radio theatre as a means of making storytelling and filmmaking more inclusive for the visually impaired.

Speaking at the National Film Authority’s National Film Dialogue in Accra on Tuesday, 16 September, Mr Amugi lamented that conversations about the future of Ghana’s film industry often neglect persons with disabilities, especially those who cannot see.

“Anytime the creatives meet, there is only one thing that I always think about the visually impaired. We are talking of films. How would they enjoy the theatre or filmmaking?” he asked.

He explained that radio theatre, which once thrived in Ghana’s entertainment culture, could be reintroduced to ensure the visually impaired are not left out of the storytelling experience.

“I think we have thrown away radio theatre, which I believe will also help the visually impaired to understand what we do,” the actor emphasised.

Mr Amugi urged creatives and broadcasters to collaborate with radio stations to bring back the tradition, adding: “Let us ask the radio stations to start doing radio theatre.”
