Abdul Salam Mumuni urges artistes to promote local films

Renowned Ghanaian filmmaker Abdul Salam Mumuni has called on musicians and fellow filmmakers to rally behind one another in promoting local movies, regardless of their direct involvement in a project.
Speaking at the National Film Dialogue held at the Cedi Conference Centre of the University of Ghana on 16 September 2025, Mumuni lamented the lack of collective support among industry players.
He noted that many artistes only use their platforms to publicise films they personally star in, a practice he described as detrimental to the wider industry.
“The artistes, we need them; they need to help promote when a movie is coming out. When artistes are not in a movie, they do not promote. But if we want the industry back, we should look at what our colleagues are doing; they help each other. We need to do that,” the filmmaker urged.
Mr Mumuni emphasised that in an era where social media is a powerful promotional tool, every stakeholder has a role to play in amplifying the reach of Ghanaian films.
He stressed that a united promotional push would go a long way in reviving the once-vibrant local movie sector.
“So please, this is the time we need to come together and support each other,” the filmmaker said, underscoring that solidarity within the creative space is key to growth and sustainability.
The National Film Dialogue, themed “Accelerating Industry Development”, brought together stakeholders from across the creative arts sector, including representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the National Film Authority, producers, distributors and film enthusiasts.
Discussions centred on collaboration, funding and strategies to position Ghana’s film industry competitively both locally and globally.
