Police intercept 248 bags of smuggled cocoa at Big-Ada

The Ada District Police Command has intercepted two tipper trucks carrying 248 maxi bags of cocoa beans, suspected to be bound for smuggling outside Ghana.

According to a statement from ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Relations at the Tema Regional Police Command, the seizure occurred on 10 September 2025 around 5:00 p.m. when a patrol team stopped the trucks at Big-Ada near Ada Senior High School.

The double-axle trucks, registered GN 6953-22 and GR 9877-12, were driven by Solomon Tetteh, aged 28, and Nicholas Tetteh, aged 27.

A search of the vehicles uncovered 248 bags of cocoa beans hidden in jute and nylon sacks.

Police said the suspected owner of the beans, Stephen Okronipa, aged 36, was arrested along with the two drivers.

All three are in custody, and the trucks have been impounded as investigations continue.

The seized cocoa beans have been handed over to COCOBOD in Tema for safekeeping, while the suspects face potential prosecution under Ghana’s anti-smuggling laws.

Authorities used the incident to warn the public, particularly transport operators and traders, against aiding in cocoa smuggling.

“Persons found abetting such illegal activities will be dealt with according to the law,” the statement emphasised.
