46-year-old man arrested with 506 wrappers of suspected Indian hemp in Gbintiri

Police in the North East Region have arrested a 46-year-old man, identified as Nana Amadu, at Gbintiri near Nalerigu for unlawful possession of restricted and narcotic drugs.
The arrest, which followed an intelligence-led operation on Friday, 12 September 2025, led officers to the suspect’s residence, where they discovered seven compressed parcels and 506 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The police also retrieved three boxes of brown paper wrappers of Oris Cigarettes, three packs of Vergra 50mg tablets, seventy-three cigarette lighters and two bundles of rubber wrappers.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted ownership of the items.
He is currently in police custody as investigations continue and will be arraigned before court once the process is complete.
The police have cautioned the public, especially individuals engaged in the sale and use of narcotic drugs, to desist from such illegal activities, warning that offenders will face the full force of the law.
The nation has in recent years intensified its crackdown on the cultivation, possession and trafficking of narcotic drugs, with cannabis being the most commonly seized substance.
Although Parliament passed the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019), which permits the cultivation of cannabis with not more than 0.3 per cent THC content for industrial and medicinal purposes, the recreational use and illegal trade of marijuana remain strictly prohibited.
Law enforcement agencies, particularly the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), have been conducting targeted operations in communities across the country where the drug trade is known to thrive.
The North East Region, where the latest arrest occurred, has been flagged as one of the emerging hotspots for the illicit drug trade, with traffickers exploiting its remote settlements and porous routes to distribute narcotics.
