Deputy Trade Minister urges India–Africa ties to drive growth
Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Sampson Ahi, has called for deeper collaboration between India and Africa to drive prosperity, sustainability and inclusive growth.
Speaking on behalf of the Sector Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, at the 20th India–Africa Business Conclave in New Delhi, themed “Co-Creating a Shared Future,” Mr Ahi stressed that the relationship between India and Africa must move beyond donor–beneficiary ties to one built on co-investment, co-innovation and co-creation.
He noted that both regions, home to some of the world’s youngest populations and fastest-growing economies, face similar challenges including rapid urbanisation, job creation, infrastructure development and climate change.
These shared realities, he said, present fertile ground for collaboration, particularly in mobility and energy.
Mr Ahi proposed four key areas for strengthening the partnership. First, he called for collaborative electric vehicle manufacturing by leveraging India’s expertise in software, battery management and small EV platforms alongside Africa’s mineral resources to develop local EV ecosystems.
He said this would reduce import dependence while creating jobs, training centres and supporting industries.
Second, he urged the adaptation of India’s low-cost transport solutions, including next-generation electric three-wheelers, to suit Africa’s needs.
These vehicles, he explained, could help ease congestion, navigate rugged terrains, carry heavy loads and even serve as mobile marketplaces.
Third, he advocated for sustainable fuel adoption by replicating India’s ethanol production model using agricultural waste.
This approach, he said, would boost farmer incomes, cut reliance on fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions while delivering both economic and environmental benefits.
Finally, Mr Ahi called on stakeholders to move beyond dialogue and forge practical alliances that will accelerate development across both regions.
