Two police officers remanded over missing rifles
Two police officers have appeared before the Accra Circuit Court for their alleged roles in the disappearance of 16 CZ assault rifles belonging to the Ghana Police Service.
Lance Corporal William Atia Asitanga, 32, and Lance Corporal Sulemana Zanya Abdul-Rahman, 27, have been charged with abetment of crime, namely stealing.
Lance Corporal Asitanga faces an additional charge of stealing the rifles.
Both officers pleaded not guilty before the presiding judge, Evelyn Asamoah, and were remanded into lawful custody.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye, told the court that some of the weapons had been retrieved.
He requested additional time to conclude investigations and file disclosures.
The court granted the request and adjourned the case to 10 September 2025.
According to the prosecution, the Ghana Police Service is the complainant in the case. Asitanga was stationed at the National Counter Terrorism Department in Accra, where he served as the armourer responsible for arms and ammunition.
Abdul-Rahman, on the other hand, was stationed at Asiwa in the Bekwai District of the Ashanti Region.
The case stems from an internal audit conducted in March 2024, which uncovered that 16 CZ assault rifles were missing. Asitanga, as the officer in charge of the armoury, was unable to account for the weapons, triggering investigations.
Preliminary findings led to the arrest of the two officers, who are currently assisting with ongoing investigations.
