Mahama grants amnesty to 998 prisoners

President John Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners across Ghana, offering a chance at renewed freedom for many who have served time in the nation’s correctional facilities.
The decision follows recommendations from the Prisons Service Council and consultations with the Council of State, in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
Initially, 1,014 prisoners were recommended, but the number was refined after further assessments to ensure that only eligible individuals benefited.
A statement signed by Minister of Government Communications and presidential spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, detailed the categories of beneficiaries.
First-time offenders make up the largest group, with 787 prisoners granted amnesty.
Additionally, 87 individuals on death row have had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, while 51 life-sentenced prisoners now face definite terms of 20 years.
Other beneficiaries include 33 seriously ill inmates, 36 prisoners aged 70 and above regardless of their offences, two nursing mothers, and two individuals benefiting from special petitions.
