Media using musicians’ songs without paying royalties – George Quaye
Media personality and playwright George Quaye has raised concerns about what he describes as the unfair financial burden placed on Ghanaian musicians, accusing media houses of profiting from artistes’ work without offering fair compensation.
In a recent Facebook post, Quaye highlighted the irony of the situation, noting that musicians often pay large sums for airtime to promote their concerts and projects, yet the same media outlets use their songs extensively without paying the necessary royalties.
“It’s concerning how many musicians struggle to pay media houses large sums of money for airtime to promote their concerts, when these same media houses often use their songs without paying royalties,” he wrote.
His comments echo recent claims by the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) that 90 percent of Ghana’s broadcasting networks refuse to pay musician royalties, despite benefiting from their work.
