GAF pays tribute to fallen hero Squadron Leader Anala
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has paid tribute to Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, one of the eight victims of the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on August 6.
Describing him as an “irreplaceable loss,” the GAF praised the late officer’s distinguished career and unwavering dedication to duty.
The tribute was delivered by Air Commodore Mathias Awuah during the Night of Memories and Reflections held in Accra on Saturday, August 9. The solemn event honored all those who perished in the crash.
Speaking on behalf of Suweibah Adam, Chief Director of the Ministry of Defence, Air Commodore Awuah highlighted Squadron Leader Anala’s professionalism and commitment to service.
“His sudden departure is an irreplaceable loss to the service and the Ghana Armed Forces as a whole. Commissioned into the Operations Branch on October 17, 2014, Squadron Leader Anala exercised exceptional skill, discipline, and dedication,” the tribute stated.
The message also emphasized his extensive training, both locally and abroad, which shaped his exemplary performance in the field.
“Your duty is done, but your legacy endures forever,” the statement added, drawing emotional responses from attendees.
The fatal crash claimed eight lives and plunged the nation into mourning. Among the deceased were two cabinet ministers: Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.
Other victims included Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The remaining casualties were crew members of the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Initial reports indicate that the group was en route to Obuasi to participate in an anti-illegal mining operation targeting galamsey activities.
The helicopter reportedly went off radar during the flight, prompting a search-and-rescue mission that ended in tragedy.
