Cedi@60 launch postponed as nation mourns helicopter tragedy

The Bank of Ghana has announced the postponement of the national launch of the Cedi@60 Anniversary celebration, originally scheduled for Friday, August 8, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

In a statement, the Bank said the decision was made in light of the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of five prominent government officials and three members of the Ghana Armed Forces.

“We regret to announce that the launch has been postponed,” the statement read.

The Bank extended its deepest condolences to the President of the Republic, the Government, the people of Ghana, and the families of the deceased.

It further noted that the Bank appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders and the general public during this period of national mourning.

The Ghanaian cedi was introduced on July 19, 1965, replacing the Ghanaian pound as the country’s official currency. The switch marked a significant step in Ghana’s post-independence economic identity and was spearheaded by the country’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Over the past six decades, the cedi has undergone several changes, including redenominations and currency reforms, to reflect shifts in the economy, stabilize inflation, and enhance financial inclusion.
