AMA’s Central Business District cleanup yields 14.4-ton waste reduction

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) ongoing decongestion exercise has led to a significant reduction in waste generated from the Central Business District (CBD), with a 14.4-ton drop recorded in recent weeks.
The update was shared on Monday during the continuation of the First Ordinary Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Assembly of the AMA.
During the meeting, Head of Waste Management at the AMA, Engineer Solomon Noi, disclosed that prior to the exercise, the Assembly deployed four tipper trucks, each making at least six trips daily to evacuate waste from the CBD. Since the start of the decongestion campaign, the number of daily trips has dropped to an average of four.
“After the exercise, we are recording an average of four trips a day. This represents a reduction of two tipper truckloads, estimated at 14.4 tons of waste,” Mr. Noi stated.
He attributed the improvement to enhanced cleanliness and smoother traffic flow within the area, noting that better air quality has also been observed. Mr. Noi stressed the importance of sustaining the operation to maintain a clean and healthy urban environment.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, reaffirmed his commitment to the decongestion initiative, stating that sanitation performance will remain a key benchmark for assessing his leadership.
“As I speak, I have my reflector vest on and I’m heading to the market to engage the women and assure them of plans to strengthen the local economy,” the Mayor said.
Mr. Allotey clarified that the exercise is not placing any financial burden on the Assembly and highlighted continued collaboration with the police to enforce sanitation and decongestion laws.
He also emphasized the need for ongoing public education and community involvement, noting that the Assembly’s information vans are still broadcasting messages on the redline policy and the decongestion efforts.
