Gov’t proposes moving midweek holidays to Fridays for better productivity

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has proposed that all public holidays falling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays be observed on Fridays to minimise disruptions to national productivity.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament during proceedings on Tuesday, the Minister argued that midweek holidays often interrupt the work cycle, especially in the public and private sectors, reducing output and affecting efficiency.
“When holidays fall in the middle of the week, they break the rhythm of the working week and reduce productivity. Observing such holidays on Fridays would allow for a more continuous workflow while still preserving the significance of the holiday,” Mr. Muntaka stated.
The proposal aims to align midweek holidays with weekends to create longer rest periods without compromising economic activity. According to the Minister, this adjustment would not only streamline national productivity but also promote better planning for both institutions and families.
The suggestion sparked immediate debate on the floor of Parliament, with some MPs welcoming the move as a practical solution, while others called for wider consultations with labour unions, religious bodies, and civil society groups before any policy shift is made.
The Interior Ministry is expected to engage stakeholders in the coming weeks as discussions on the proposal continue.
