Nurses, Midwives express disappointment with Health Committee over meeting postponement

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed disappointment with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, accusing it of breaching an agreed roadmap aimed at resolving outstanding issues related to the implementation of revised conditions of service.

This follows GRNMA’s decision to suspend its nationwide strike earlier this month after receiving assurances from the Committee that concrete steps would be taken to implement four key items outlined in the agreement.

However, the Association says the Committee has unilaterally postponed a critical meeting scheduled for June 26 to July 10, 2025.

The reason given was the unavailability of key stakeholders who are currently outside the country. GRNMA described the rescheduling as a sign of the Committee’s lack of urgency in addressing the longstanding concerns of nurses and midwives.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, June 26, GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo criticised the move and urged the government to demonstrate greater respect for the nursing and midwifery profession.

She stressed that the revised collective agreement must be fully implemented by the end of July 2025. Failure to honor the timeline, she warned, could trigger the resumption of industrial action.

“The rescheduling of the meeting, in our view, is in bad faith, as it may cause further delays in the implementation of the agreed items. Nonetheless, we have chosen to give the Committee the benefit of the doubt and hope that its engagements with the Ministries of Health and Finance will yield positive results,” she stated.

“We demand the full implementation of the four agreed-upon items by July 2025. This is non-negotiable, and any further delay will leave us with no option but to reconsider our next line of action,” the GRNMA president added.
