Over 150,000 sign up for NYA’s apprenticeship program

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The National Youth Authority (NYA) has announced that over 150,000 Ghanaian youth have enrolled in the newly launched National Apprenticeship Program, far exceeding the initial target of 10,000 participants for the first phase.

The overwhelming response signals a renewed sense of determination among the nation’s youth to acquire practical skills for sustainable livelihoods.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, June 24, during an engagement with master craftsmen in Accra, Jacob Adongo, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the NYA, described the development as a powerful endorsement of the program’s relevance and urgency.

“The young people of this country are very resilient; they are not lazy, and all they need is opportunity. This type of opportunity has been made available. We want them to take advantage of it, learn, strike very hard, reduce alcohol intake, avoid drugs, and focus,” Mr. Adongo said.

Training to Begin in July

According to the NYA, registration and assessment of applicants are currently underway nationwide, with training expected to begin in July 2025.

Participants will be equipped with a wide range of practical and industry-driven skills across various trades, including carpentry, tailoring, welding, electrical work, auto mechanics, hairdressing, and more.

The Authority is working closely with master craftsmen and vocational institutions to deliver the training and ensure quality and relevance to industry needs.

Stipends and Start-up Kits for Beneficiaries

To ensure equity and sustained participation, Mr. Adongo revealed that all successful applicants would be supported with transportation stipends throughout the training period.

Upon completion, participants will receive start-up kits in their respective trades — a move aimed at facilitating immediate entry into the job market or self-employment.

“This is not just training. We are making sure they are not stranded after they complete the program. We are providing them with the tools they need to begin their careers,” Mr. Adongo explained.

Addressing Youth Unemployment with Skills

The National Apprenticeship Program forms part of broader government efforts to reduce youth unemployment by equipping young people with technical and vocational skills critical for Ghana’s industrialization agenda.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, youth unemployment remains one of the country’s most pressing economic challenges, with thousands of young people graduating each year into a labor market that lacks sufficient formal jobs.

The NYA believes the program can serve as a strategic intervention to create jobs, reduce dependency, and promote entrepreneurship among the youth.

“This is about building the future of Ghana with capable, skilled hands,” Mr. Adongo emphasized.
