GH₵50 million boost for Ghana’s national research fund to power innovation

The government has allocated GHS50 million to the Ghana National Research Fund in a bid to strengthen the country’s research ecosystem and stimulate innovation across key sectors, including science, technology, and agriculture.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the official inauguration of the Governing Council of the Fund on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. The council will be responsible for overseeing the effective management and disbursement of funds to support high-impact research initiatives.

Describing the fund as a strategic tool for national transformation, Minister Iddrisu emphasised the importance of evidence-based research in shaping Ghana’s future.

“This year, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the Ministry of Education, and the Government of Ghana have made an allocation of 50 million Ghana cedis for the National Research Fund,” the Minister announced.

He added that the fund is already attracting interest from bilateral and multilateral partners, who are eager to support its objectives through additional financing and technical assistance. “I can assure you that there is a lot of bilateral and multilateral interest in the work of the National Research Fund, and if you do well, you will get additional complementary support,” the Minister stated.
