Ghana needs $562bn for full transition by 2070 – Energy Ministry

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced that Ghana will require an estimated $562 billion to fully implement its energy transition agenda by 2070. This projection comes as the country prepares to embark on a nuclear power project, with construction expected to begin by 2027.

According to the Ministry, several ongoing initiatives, including the development of 33 new solar mini-grids for island communities, highlight Ghana’s gradual but steady progress toward a greener future.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement session on Ghana’s Energy Transition Framework in Accra on Wednesday, May 21, the Deputy Director for Renewables and Green Emerging Technologies, Dr. Robert Sogbadji, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the framework.

“As of now, Ghana is putting all efforts into adhering to our energy transition framework. We currently have over 89% electricity access nationwide. However, this transition must be implemented across all regions, with active involvement from District Chief Executives. There is a need to raise awareness so that all development projects consider energy transition goals,” Dr. Sogbadji stated.

He emphasized that funding the transition will require collective support from both the public and private sectors. “We need about $562 billion to complete this transition by 2070. This isn’t just the government’s responsibility. The private sector, development partners, and multilateral development banks must all play a role to ensure a smooth transition,” he added.
