Tamale Accounts for 70% of Power Losses in Northern Sector – Energy Minister

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has revealed that half of the total power losses recorded by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) originate from the northern sector, with Tamale alone accounting for 70% of those losses.
Speaking during a working visit to the region, the Minister attributed the alarming figures to widespread illegal electricity connections, particularly in the Tamale metropolis.
“Illegal connections in Tamale are significantly above the national average. We are seeing situations where transformers designed to serve ten households are now overloaded with as many as thirty. This not only compromises the equipment but also results in frequent power tripping and an unreliable supply,” he explained.
The Minister called on residents to rally behind NEDCo’s efforts to clamp down on power theft, stressing that the consequences of illegal connections are felt by all.
“When people engage in power theft, it affects everyone in the community,” he stated. “
Mr. Jinapor also appealed for public cooperation during NEDCo’s upcoming disconnection exercise, assuring that the operation would be carried out professionally and with safety as a top priority.
“We understand the sensitivities involved, which is why we are approaching this with careful planning,” he noted.
The Minister proposed the introduction of flexible payment plans to support NEDCo’s revenue recovery drive to ease the burden on indebted customers.
“We are not just cutting off power we’re also offering solutions. Flexible payment arrangements will help consumers settle their debts without placing undue hardship on them,” he stated.
He further assured NEDCo staff of their safety during the exercise, stating that the Ghana Police Service had committed to providing full security support. “The safety of workers is paramount, and I have received firm assurances from the Ghana Police Service that adequate security will be deployed throughout the operation,” he said.
