Ghana now 5th largest holder of Central Bank gold reserves in Africa

GHANA has solidified its position as a key player in Africa’s gold reserve landscape, ranking as the 5th largest holder of central bank gold reserves on the continent and 60th globally. The country’s gold reserves currently stand at 28.1 tonnes, representing 41.2% of its total reserves.

This marks a significant increase from May 2023, when Ghana’s reserves were just under 9 tonnes. In June 2023, the country added an additional tonne, signaling a steady and deliberate accumulation strategy by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Africa’s Top Gold Reserve Holders

Ghana’s gold reserves position it behind only Algeria, Libya, Egypt, and South Africa in Africa:

            •           Algeria: 173.6 tonnes

            •           Libya: 146.7 tonnes

            •           Egypt: 126.8 tonnes

            •           South Africa: 125.4 tonnes

            •           Ghana: 28.1 tonnes

Globally, the United States leads with a staggering 8,133.5 tonnes, followed by Germany (3,351.5 tonnes) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) (2,814 tonnes).

Ghana’s Strategy and Implications

The sharp increase in Ghana’s gold reserves reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to bolster economic stability and hedge against external financial shocks. With gold prices continuing to play a critical role in global markets, Ghana’s reserve growth enhances its resilience in the face of currency fluctuations and global economic uncertainties.

Gold also serves as a strategic asset for countries aiming to strengthen their monetary systems. By increasing its reserves, Ghana is aligning with global trends among central banks that have been stockpiling gold as a safeguard against rising inflation and geopolitical risks.

Outlook for Ghana’s Gold Reserves

Given Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s largest gold producers, the country has the potential to continue expanding its reserves. The Bank of Ghana’s strategy highlights the importance of leveraging domestic gold resources to secure long-term economic sustainability. As global financial markets remain volatile, the steady rise in Ghana’s gold holdings reinforces its position as an influential player on both the African and global stages.
