Otto Addo lists key areas of improvement after AFCON failure

Ghana coach Otto Addo has admitted the need for improvements within the team to restore their competitive edge following the disastrous 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
Addo acknowledged during a meeting with the Ghana FA on Wednesday that he failed in the qualifiers and promised to turn things around in a 56-page technical report he submitted to the federation.
The Black Stars failed to win a match in six, scoring just three goals and losing three. This left them bottom of the qualifying group for the first time, marking the first time since 2004 that the Black Stars have missed out on the AFCON.
The meeting, which many Ghanaians expected would result in a decision on Otto Addo’s future, ended without a resolution. The Ghana FA remains undecided, instead releasing a statement outlining the matters discussed.
According to the GFA statement, Addo identified discipline, accountability, and trust as key focus areas, adding that he intends to establish a cohesive system reflecting a clear and recognisable playing philosophy.
“He went on to outline key areas that needed improvement moving forward. He indicated his intention to build a strong and cohesive system that fosters discipline, accountability, and trust among players and backroom staff while emphasising a clear and recognisable playing philosophy,” the statement read.
It appears the FA is inclined to retain Otto Addo, given the team’s turnaround in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. When he took charge, Ghana’s qualification prospects were in jeopardy, but the team is now in a strong position with four games remaining. While the Ghana FA plans to consult broadly before making a decision, indications suggest they are leaning towards keeping Addo.
