James Gardiner highlights social media’s role in boosting African movie industry

Ghanaian actor James Gardiner has emphasized the significant role social media plays in promoting the African movie industry, urging stakeholders to harness these platforms more effectively. In a recent interview with Doreen Avio, the star of the film Taste of Sin highlighted YouTube as an underutilized platform with immense potential for generating revenue and expanding the reach of African films.
Gardiner noted that while major streaming services like Netflix have garnered much attention, YouTube remains a valuable resource that is often overlooked. He pointed out that some African productions on YouTube have amassed up to 29 million views, showcasing the platform’s capacity to drive engagement and profitability for the industry.
The actor also drew comparisons between Ghanaian and Nigerian TV stations, observing that Nigerian channels frequently source content from YouTube, which has contributed to the success of many films in Nigeria. He suggested that Ghanaian filmmakers could similarly benefit from this approach, potentially increasing the visibility and success of their work.
Gardiner shared that his recent experiences working in Nigeria have been positive, highlighting the robust demand for African films across the continent. He expressed optimism about the future of the Ghanaian movie industry, stressing that with a positive mindset and consistent efforts, the industry is poised for growth and success. Gardiner’s insights reflect a broader conversation within the African film industry about the strategic use of digital platforms to reach global audiences and enhance the economic viability of African cinema.
