‘It was the best decision’- Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan reveals impact of China move
Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has stated that his move to the Chinese Super League was a challenging decision after becoming a fan favourite at Al Ain in UAE.
Gyan made a significant career move in July 2015 when he left Al-Ain to join Shanghai SIPG on a two-year deal, earning a weekly salary of £227,000, making him one of the highest-paid players in the world at that time.
Speaking on Wontumi Radio, the 39-year-old admitted that the decision to move to China was not easy but when he sits back and thinks of it, it was the best move.
“It was a difficult decision for me, but I spoke to everyone around me, and we decided it was the best move for me,” he said.
“Luckily, it turned out well for me, and we have managed to establish companies that are employing Ghanaians.”
The legendary striker left Europe at the peak of his career to join Al-Ain from Sunderland in 2011, a decision that drew massive criticism.
However, his illustrious career saw him play for clubs like Liberty
Professionals, Stade Rennes, Udinese, and Sunderland. He also had stints with Kayserispor, North East United, and Legon Cities before announcing his retirement in June 2023.
