GPL players pockted GH¢1.23m in betPawa Locker Room Bonuses during 23/24 season
The second season of the Locker Room Bonus (LRB) initiative by betPawa has concluded with significant rewards for Ghana Premier League (GPL) players.
A total of 490 players benefited from the initiative, receiving immediate payments after each match for winning squad members.
Throughout the season, GH¢1.23 million was distributed as Locker Room Bonuses to players from 17 of the 18 participating teams.
Kumasi’s Asante Kotoko chose not to participate in the initiative.
The LRB was introduced in the 2022/23 season to celebrate winners and reward outstanding performances.
For the 2023/24 campaign, the bonus per player more than doubled, increasing from GH¢150 to GH¢400.
This bonus is paid to all players listed in the squad for each match in Ghana’s top-tier league.
The money is transferred directly to their mobile phone wallets immediately after a win, before the players leave the stadium, hence the name “Locker Room Bonus.”
“We have always sought to go beyond assisting sport management bodies in administration costs of the game to giving more to the players in terms of direct benefits as a way to motivate and celebrate them further,” said betPawa’s Country Marketing Manager, Nii Armah Ashong-Katai.
A total of 3,094 LRB payouts were successfully completed during the season, which ended on Sunday, June 16th.
FC Samartex 1996 emerged as the surprise champions of the season, beating Accra Lions 2-0 to seal their victory.
Promoted to the GPL just two years ago, Samartex had finished 10th in their debut season.
“It sat well with us and the vision that we have, it has added a lot of competition during training,” said FC Samartex’s Business Development Manager, Paul Ayamba.
“The team’s captain added, “After games you have your phone vibrating with a certain amount of bonus. It is very exciting to us.”
The betPawa Locker Room Bonus initiative is also being run in other regions.
BetPawa’s management has stated that the system used to distribute the bonus is available to other like-minded leagues and corporations that wish to reward players similarly.
