Nigerian boxer Sherif Lawal dies after collapsing in ring on professional debut

London-based Nigerian-British boxer Sherif Lawal has tragically passed away following a head injury sustained during his professional debut.
During the fourth round of a scheduled six-round middleweight fight against Portuguese opponent Malam Varela at the Harrow Leisure Centre in London, UK, Lawal was knocked down by a blow to the head.
Despite receiving immediate attention from paramedics and being swiftly transported to the hospital, Lawal tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) extended their condolences to Lawal’s family, describing his passing as a tragic loss to the boxing community.
“The British Boxing Board of Control sends their condolences to the family of Sherifdeen Lawal following his tragic passing after his Boxing contest on Sunday,” the BBBC posted on social media on Monday.
“The thoughts of all those involved in Boxing in Great Britain are with them at this difficult time.”
Warren Boxing Management also shared their condolences on social media, stating, “We would like to send our condolences to all of Sherif’s family, friends, coaches, and all those close to him at this tragic time.”
Lawal’s untimely death has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, serving as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with the sport.
