Insurance industry on transformative shift

Story: Isaac AIDOO, Accra

GHANA’S insurance industry is on the brink of a transformative shift, with innovations in insurance technology promising to make policies more affordable and accessible to a wider segment of the population.

In an interview at a recent insurance technology forum, Elias Omondi, Principal of Innovation for Resilience at FSD Africa and a seasoned policy and regulatory expert, detailed how technology is being harnessed to address two significant barriers in the Ghanaian insurance sector: affordability and accessibility.

Omondi noted that while insurance serves as a vital safety net, affordability remains a substantial obstacle for many Ghanaians. He pointed out that over half of current insurance premiums are spent on administrative costs, inflating prices and limiting consumer access.

This excessive administrative burden has made it difficult for lower-income and rural populations to afford insurance coverage, further widening the protection gap in Ghana. However, Omondi explained that the tide is turning as industry innovators streamline these processes through technology, reducing costs by up to 30%.

“With advanced technology, we are going to ensure that this product becomes more affordable,” Omondi shared, underscoring that the savings from reduced administrative costs will allow insurers to offer lower premiums.

This cost-saving potential could translate into meaningful access for underserved communities, enabling them to protect themselves and their families against financial risks.

Beyond affordability, accessibility to insurance remains a pressing challenge. In Ghana, insurance penetration is currently at around 40%, leaving a significant portion of the population unprotected.

Omondi emphasized that technology has a critical role to play in expanding the reach of insurance services, especially in remote and rural areas where physical infrastructure and agent networks are limited.

Through digital platforms, mobile applications, and other tech-driven solutions, FSD Africa, in collaboration with the National Insurance Commission (NIC), aims to increase the reach of insurance services to as many as 60% of Ghanaians.

This goal aligns closely with the NIC’s broader objectives of expanding insurance coverage across the country and reinforcing financial resilience among Ghanaian households

By increasing insurance penetration, the NIC seeks to empower individuals with essential safety nets, reducing their vulnerability to unforeseen events and improving overall economic stability.

Omondi sees technology as not only a tool for reducing costs and improving access but also as a catalyst for a more resilient financial ecosystem in Ghana.

The ongoing changes in Ghana’s insurance sector reflect a broader global trend toward digitalization in financial services, especially in developing economies where traditional financial products have struggled to reach vast portions of the population.

These insurance technology advancements, therefore, mark a significant step forward in creating a more inclusive and equitable insurance landscape in Ghana. By harnessing the power of technology, FSD Africa and its partners are helping to drive a positive shift that could build stronger financial resilience among Ghana’s underserved communities, paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
