Ghana Athletics Backs Tampico Accra Inter-City Marathon

Ghana Athletics (GA), the country’s governing body for track and field, has officially thrown its weight behind the maiden Tampico Accra Inter-City Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2026, in what is expected to become one of Ghana’s biggest road racing events.

The endorsement marks a major milestone for the event, with the national federation confirming its commitment to provide the technical support required to ensure a professionally organised and internationally recognised competition. The move also reflects Ghana Athletics’ broader efforts to strengthen road racing standards and expand opportunities for athletes across the country.

Organised by Medivents Consult and headlined by leading beverage brand Tampico, the race is expected to attract more than 2,000 runners, including elite athletes, recreational runners, fitness clubs, corporate teams and road race enthusiasts from across Ghana and beyond.

One of the biggest innovations for the 2026 edition will be the introduction of an electronic timing system, a first for the event. According to Ghana Athletics, the technology will deliver precise race timing, eliminate opportunities for cheating and ensure that athletes’ performances meet internationally accepted standards.

The federation believes the electronic timing system will also provide competitors with officially recognised results, giving outstanding performers the opportunity to use their times when registering for future international competitions. The initiative aligns with Ghana Athletics’ commitment to modernising athletics administration and enhancing the credibility of road races in the country.

The marathon will feature two race categories, a 21-kilometre Half Marathon and a 5-kilometre Fun Run making the event accessible to both competitive runners and individuals looking to embrace healthy lifestyles through sport.

Participants will begin and end their journey at the Trust Sports Emporium (Bukom Boxing Arena), with the course winding through some of Accra’s most iconic streets and landmarks. Beyond the competition, organisers promise a memorable race-day experience that combines fitness, tourism and entertainment, allowing participants to appreciate the capital’s rich history and vibrant culture before enjoying music, refreshments and other attractions at the finish line.
