Speaker Raises Concern Over Family Impact of Sending Children Abroad

Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has raised concerns about the growing trend of parents sending their children abroad for education, urging families to carefully consider the long-term effects on family relationships, child development and national progress.
Speaking to Members of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Bagbin acknowledged that overseas education can provide valuable opportunities and exposure for young people, but cautioned that such decisions must be guided by more than the pursuit of foreign opportunities.
He said parents must consider the emotional, social and cultural impact of separating children from their families and communities at a young age.
According to the Speaker, some families prioritise sending their children abroad without fully assessing the consequences for family bonds and the role parents play in shaping responsible future citizens.
He stressed that education is not only about academic achievement but also involves values, character formation and social development, which are influenced by the environment in which children grow.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin encouraged parents to support the development of Ghana’s education system while exploring opportunities that allow children to receive quality education without losing connection with their families, culture and national identity.
He urged families to make decisions that prioritise the overall wellbeing and future of their children rather than focusing solely on the perceived advantages of studying abroad.
The Speaker also called on Members of Parliament to uphold high standards of integrity both within and outside their constituencies, particularly those seeking re-election in future elections.
He advised legislators to remain committed to ethical conduct, accountability and service to their constituents, noting that public trust is critical for political leadership.
Hon. Bagbin said Members of Parliament must demonstrate integrity in their personal and public lives, as their actions influence public confidence in Parliament and democratic institutions.
He urged lawmakers to serve with honesty, responsibility and dedication, especially as they seek to maintain the confidence of citizens they represent.
