Ghana’s debt repayments under control – BoG Governor

By Raphael Nii Trebi Hammond

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, has provided firm assurances that Ghana’s debt repayment obligations are under control and supported by sufficient international reserves.

Speaking at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing in Accra, Dr. Asiama emphasized that the country has already begun meeting its debt obligations and is not waiting for any grace period to expire.

“We are already paying our debts. It’s not going to start only in the next 18 months,” he stated.

He explained that the Bank has developed a comprehensive cash flow plan that takes into account all upcoming international obligations, including debt servicing, dividend payments, and other cross-border commitments.

“We have all of them programmed, and we think that the level of international reserves we have now is pretty adequate,” Dr. Asiama added. Analysts view Dr. Asiama’s comments as a move to boost investor confidence and reassure the public as Ghana navigates its economic recovery path. The Bank is expected to continue closely monitoring international payments and provide regular updates on reserve adequacy.
