Senaya Named in Opta’s World Cup Team of the Group Stage

Ghanaian defender Marvin Senaya has been named in Opta’s Best XI of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage following a series of outstanding performances for the Black Stars so far.
The versatile defender featured in all three of Ghana’s Group L matches, playing a key role as the Black Stars progressed to the Round of 32 after finishing third behind England and Croatia.
Senaya’s defensive numbers were among the best in the tournament. He attempted a competition-high 18 tackles and won 24 of his 38 duels, highlighting his consistency and effectiveness at the back.
The 25-year-old was particularly impressive in Ghana’s goalless draw against England, where he produced a disciplined display to keep one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacks at bay, including limiting the influence of Anthony Gordon following the winger’s recent €80 million move to Barcelona.
His performances have earned widespread praise and now recognition from Opta, which has included him among the standout players of the group stage.
The AJ Auxerre defender made the list alongside top stars like Leo Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Vini Jr, Erling Haaland etc.
Senaya will be hoping to maintain his fine form when Ghana take on Colombia in the Round of 32 on Saturday, July 4, as the Black Stars chase a place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
