Ghana to Build Border Health Posts to Guard Against Ebola
The government has announced a new plan to build modern health posts at all land borders to protect the country from dangerous diseases coming from outside.
Deputy Minister for Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, made the announcement during a visit to the Aflao Border Post in the Volta Region. She said the new facilities will improve Ghana’s ability to check travellers, carry out emergency screening, and respond quickly to outbreaks such as Ebola.
Her visit was part of government’s emergency measures to prepare against recent Ebola outbreaks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These outbreaks have put health authorities across West Africa on high alert.
Dr. Ayensu Danquah told border security officers, immigration staff, and health workers that temporary screening points are no longer enough. She explained that the new permanent health posts will have isolation units, thermal scanners, and rapid test equipment. They will also be staffed by trained medical teams ready to act at any time.
She said the project shows government’s strong commitment to protecting public health and building a stronger border health system. By setting up these permanent posts, Ghana will create a continuous network that can detect, isolate, and manage suspected cases before they spread to big cities.
The Deputy Minister added that the plan is not only about Ebola but also about preparing for other viral diseases and future health emergencies. She stressed that Ghana must be proactive in protecting its people and preventing cross border infections.
The Ministry of Health, working with the Ghana Health Service and international border agencies, will soon release the designs and timelines for the construction of the new health posts. The rollout is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
Officials believe the project will improve Ghana’s readiness to handle health crises and reassure citizens that the government is taking strong steps to protect the nation. By building these health posts, Ghana hopes to strengthen its border security framework and prevent the importation of deadly diseases.
