Joseph Anang Makes History with World Cup Call-Up

St. Patrick’s Athletic goalkeeper Joseph Anang has made history by becoming the first player from the club to be named in a FIFA World Cup squad.
The 25 year old has been selected by Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz as one of three goalkeepers for the Black Stars’ 26 man squad for the 2026 tournament.
Anang joins Accra Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare and Joseph Ati Zigi of Swiss side St. Gallen in the squad. Ghana will face England, Croatia, and Panama in the group stage of the competition, which will be played across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The call up is a major milestone for Anang and for St. Patrick’s Athletic, who currently sit third in the Irish Men’s Premier Division standings. The club has won nine, drawn five, and lost five of its 18 league matches so far this season. Anang has played a key role in their campaign, conceding 17 goals and keeping six clean sheets in 19 league appearances. His performances in Europe have also been notable, with three clean sheets in six UEFA Europa Conference League games.
Anang’s consistent displays have earned him recognition beyond Ireland, and his inclusion in Ghana’s squad is seen as a reward for his steady development. His journey from club football in Ireland to the global stage of the World Cup highlights the growing reputation of St. Patrick’s Athletic as a club capable of nurturing talent for the highest levels of the game.
Following the announcement of the Ghana squad, St. Patrick’s Athletic expressed pride in Anang’s achievement. In a post on X, the club wrote: “For the first time in our club’s history a player from St Patrick’s Athletic will travel to the World Cup. We’re all behind Joseph Anang and Ghana in Canada, Mexico & the USA!” The message captured the excitement of fans and officials who see Anang’s selection as a landmark moment.
For Ghana, Anang’s inclusion strengthens the goalkeeping department as the team prepares for tough group stage matches. Head coach Carlos Queiroz has emphasised the importance of balance and experience in his squad, and Anang’s form in both domestic and European competitions adds depth to the team.
