Kurt Okraku Says Kobbie Mainoo Should Have Chosen Ghana Over England
President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has expressed disappointment over the increasing number of players with African heritage opting to represent European nations.
Speaking ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Okraku said it is disheartening to see talented footballers of African descent choosing countries outside their roots, citing Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as an example.
“Full-blooded Ghanaians should be representing their countries. That is my clear opinion on representation when it comes to national teams in football,” he said.
He acknowledged the strength of England’s national team but stressed that Ghana would be highly competitive at the tournament.
“Having said that, I think England has a good team. It is important we respect the manager and the experience that he brings on board, but what is also true is that they will meet a very, very competitive and determined Ghanaian side,” he said.
When pressed on Mainoo’s decision, Okraku described it as unfortunate.
“Well, it is most unfortunate, to be honest,” he said.
He added that the issue raises broader questions about international football representation.
“I wish I never comment on it. I wish I never comment on such situations because, for example, when I watched the French national team win the World Cup and the team is made up of 11 Africans, it always tells me there is a subject that has to be discussed,” he noted.
Ghana is expected to face England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a fixture that could see Mainoo line up against the country of his heritage.
