Soldier, Granted GH¢2m Bail Over Alleged Assault on Chinese National

An Accra Circuit Court One has granted bail of GH¢2 million each to a soldier and five security operatives accused of assaulting a Chinese national during an alleged unauthorized operation at a factory in the Central Region.

The court set strict bail conditions requiring each accused person to produce three sureties, with one surety mandated to justify ownership of landed property within the court’s jurisdiction valued at not less than the bail sum. The accused persons have also been ordered to report to investigators twice a week, deposit their passports at the Court Registry, and refrain from travelling outside the court’s jurisdiction.

The accused include Lance Corporal Benjamin Agyekum and Mahama Iddrisu, Dauda Seidu, Isaac Ofori, Adom Bills, Hayford Boafo and Ato McHenry. They have all denied charges of conspiracy to form an illegal group, assault, and membership of an organised criminal group.

They are expected to reappear before the court on June 5, 2026.

Prosecution witness Assistant Superintendent of Police Issah Achiburi told the court that the complainants are officers from the Accra Central Regional Police Command. He said Lance Corporal Agyekum, aged 32, is a serving soldier with the 5th Infantry Battalion at Burma Camp in Accra, while the other accused persons, aged between 32 and 48, are self-styled security operatives linked to the National Security Secretariat.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on May 6, 2026, at about 12 noon when police received a distress call that the accused persons, dressed in military and immigration uniforms and travelling in a Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number GW 8887-V, had stormed the SI Jun Toiletries Manufacturing Company at Akwakwa near Mankrong Nkwanta in the Central Region.

They are alleged to have handcuffed workers and subjected them to severe beatings during the operation. Police officers who rushed to the scene reportedly intervened and rescued the victims before arresting the suspects.

Investigations further indicate that the accused persons claimed to be members of a National Security Monitoring and Evaluation Team, but allegedly failed to produce any form of identification to support their mission.

Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing.
