Businesses urged to Invest in Skilled Staff to Support Expansion

Chartered Accountant and Business Coach, Dickson Assan, has urged businesses to invest in skilled personnel and staff development as part of efforts to support growth and improve operational efficiency.
Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed 101.9FM, Mr. Assan said increasing demand for products and services is one of the clearest signs that a business must strengthen its workforce and operational structure.
“When you realize that the demand for your product or your services is there, or you are bringing in new technology and equipment to scale up and improve efficiency, that is one of the indicators that you need more hands or you want to train the existing hands,” he stated.
According to him, many businesses begin with a small team that understands the company’s operations and culture, but expansion often requires more experienced professionals who can provide strategic direction.
“There are people that normally you start a business with and they become more like the institutional memory. They understand the business and everything,” he said.
Mr. Assan explained that hiring experienced professionals often comes with higher financial commitments, but businesses must see it as an investment necessary for sustainable growth.
“When you want to bring in somebody more experienced, that also means that you have to pay more for such a person,” he noted.
He cited business expansion into new regions as an example of why companies need strategic expertise, particularly in financial management and planning.
“For example, if you want to expand to Kumasi, your accounts officer may not have the capacity to conduct proper appraisals to determine whether opening that branch will be profitable enough to sustain itself,” he explained.
Mr. Assan stressed that businesses must ensure new branches can generate enough revenue independently instead of relying on already profitable branches for survival.
He stressed that bringing in qualified professionals at the right stage of business growth can help companies make informed decisions and avoid financial setbacks.
