Interior Ministry Imposes Motorbike Ban in Binduri

The Ministry of the Interior has imposed an immediate ban on the use of motorbikes in Binduri Township and surrounding communities in the Upper East Region following a deadly attack on a military patrol team by unknown assailants.

The directive, signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak applies to all persons within Binduri and its environs, with no exemptions stated.

The Ministry explained that the measure is intended to maintain law and order, protect lives and property, and support ongoing security operations in the area.

The restriction follows a deadly ambush on a convoy under military protection escorting civilians along the volatile Bawku–Bolgatanga route.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces, the incident occurred on Monday, April 27,  at Binduri, when unknown gunmen opened fire on the convoy transporting about 140 civilians from Bawku towards Bolgatanga.

The convoy was reportedly shot at multiple times, leading to casualties among those being escorted, with three civilians confirmed dead.

The military, however, mounted a swift response and successfully repelled the attackers.

In the ensuing confrontation, seven of the assailants were killed.

In pursuit operations, the military retrieved weapons and ammunition from one of the escapees, including a G3 automatic rifle, two filled magazines of 20 rounds each and 176 rounds of additional ammunition. Security forces have since arrested 10 suspects in connection with the attack, who are currently assisting with investigations.

In a statement signed by Acting GAF Public Relations Officer, Captain Veronica Arhin, the military cautioned the public against interfering with its operations.

Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry has appealed for calm and urged residents and community leaders, including chiefs, elders, opinion leaders and the youth, to exercise restraint as security operations continue.

It further encouraged residents to rely on peaceful and lawful means in addressing grievances, rather than actions that could worsen the security situation.

The Ministry warned that anyone who violates the motorbike restriction will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Authorities say the attack on the military patrol has heightened security concerns in the Binduri area, prompting swift intervention by the government.

The latest development underscores the persistent insecurity in parts of the Upper East Region, particularly within the Bawku enclave, where tensions have periodically escalated despite ongoing security interventions.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring peace, safety and security across the country, assuring residents that all necessary measures are being taken to restore stability in the affected communities.
