GSE Market Cap Hits GH¢279bn

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed the trading week ending April 24, 2026, on a strong note, with equities extending their bullish run and pushing total market capitalisation to approximately GH¢278.98 billion.
The benchmark GSE Composite Index climbed to 14,873.11 points, representing a solid 6.05 percent increase from the previous week’s close of 14,024.22. The sustained upward movement reflects growing investor confidence and renewed appetite for equities, particularly in the financial and telecommunications sectors.
Market activity was equally robust. Total traded volume rose by 6.68 percent to 13.55 million shares, while the value of shares traded surged sharply by 40.12 percent to GH¢87.33 million. This notable jump in value indicates a shift toward higher-priced, fundamentally strong stocks, suggesting that both institutional and retail investors are increasingly targeting quality counters.
Sectoral performance showed a clear concentration of activity. The financial sector dominated trading, accounting for 46.08 percent of total volume, closely followed by the ICT sector at 43.90 percent. Combined, these two sectors made up nearly 90 percent of all shares traded during the week, underlining their central role in driving market momentum.
Among the week’s top performers, GCB Bank PLC stood out with an exceptional gain of 33.84 percent, closing at GH¢42.52 from GH¢31.77. This rally pushed its year-to-date return to over 93 percent, cementing its position as one of the market’s strongest banking stocks.
SIC Insurance Company PLC also delivered an impressive performance, rising by 20.63 percent to GH¢5.38, with its year-to-date return soaring above 348 percent. Other notable gainers included Republic Bank Ghana PLC, Societe Generale Ghana PLC, and Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana), all of which posted solid gains amid sustained buying interest.
However, the rally was not uniform across the board. TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC recorded the steepest decline, dropping 9.71 percent to GH¢34.54. Benso Oil Palm Plantation PLC and Fan Milk PLC also posted losses, reflecting pockets of profit-taking and sector-specific pressures.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index mirrored the broader market’s strength, rising 6.34 percent to close at 8,841.04. On a year-to-date basis, the Composite Index has now gained an impressive 62.16 percent, while the financial index is up over 90 percent, highlighting 2026 as a standout year for Ghana’s equity market.
Despite the strong weekly performance, Friday’s session hinted at a potential pause, with mild pullbacks observed in some of the week’s biggest gainers, including GCB Bank and MTN Ghana. This suggests that while momentum remains positive, the market could see intermittent profit-taking in the near term.
As the market heads into the final week of April, the key question for investors will be whether the current rally can be sustained or transitions into a more selective phase of consolidation.
