Self-Awareness Key to Sustainable Wealth – Management Consultant

Management Consultant Nana Esi Idun-Arkhurst has said that understanding one’s personal situation is the first step to building sustainable wealth.
According to her, financial decisions must be guided by an individual’s life stage, responsibilities and long-term goals, as there is no one-size-fits-all approach to wealth creation.
Speaking at the MTN Masterclass Series, she explained that effective wealth creation begins with self-awareness, noting that people’s financial goals and strategies must be shaped by their unique situations.
According to her, an individual’s background, responsibilities and stage in life significantly influence how they should plan and manage their finances.
She noted that someone supporting a family would require a different financial strategy compared to a young professional just starting out, particularly in terms of liquidity and investment choices.
Madam Idun-Arkhurst emphasised that without a clear understanding of one’s goals and responsibilities, it becomes difficult to build a sustainable financial plan.
She also highlighted discipline as a critical factor in wealth building, stressing that income must be deliberately allocated towards savings, investments and expenditure.
She advised individuals to create structured financial plans that account for both essential needs and lifestyle expenses, including personal care and leisure.
“Without discipline, it becomes very difficult to sustain wealth,” she stated.
She further cautioned against unplanned spending, noting that many people are unable to account for how their money is used at the end of each month due to a lack of proper budgeting.
Madam Idun-Arkhurst also urged individuals to regularly review their financial plans, especially when there are changes in income or lifestyle, to ensure alignment with long-term goals.
Additionally, she stressed the importance of continuous learning and informed decision-making, warning against investing in opportunities without fully understanding the risks and potential returns.
According to her, wealth creation is not only about earning more but also about preserving and growing existing resources.
She urged individuals to adopt structured, disciplined and informed approaches to financial management to achieve long-term financial stability.
