GSE Market Cap Rises to GH¢278bn

The Ghana Stock Exchange extended its upward momentum on Wednesday, with market capitalisation rising to GH¢278.31 billion as investors continued to accumulate positions in selected large-cap stocks, particularly within the financial and telecom sectors.

The benchmark GSE Composite Index advanced sharply by 272.83 points, closing at 14,762.45, up from 14,489.62 recorded in the previous session. Similarly, the GSE Financial Stocks Index edged higher by 51.66 points to settle at 8,776.81, reinforcing the dominant role of banking and financial equities in driving the market’s sustained rally.

The steady appreciation in market capitalisation from GH¢276.09 billion to GH¢278.31 billion reflects ongoing revaluation of listed equities, underpinned by strong investor confidence and improved liquidity conditions.

However, beneath the headline gains, trading activity revealed a more cautious and selective market environment. Total volume traded declined from 2.76 million shares to 2.29 million shares, indicating reduced participation. In contrast, total value traded surged significantly from GH¢10.28 million to GH¢25.29 million, suggesting that institutional investors and high-value transactions were increasingly shaping market direction.

Market performance was largely anchored by a few heavyweight counters. GCB Bank PLC emerged as the standout performer, recording a strong price appreciation from GH¢38.43 to GH¢42.27. The stock also dominated trading activity, with over 401,000 shares exchanged, valued at GH¢16.98 million, making it the single largest contributor to turnover for the session.

Scancom PLC, the operator of MTN Ghana, maintained its position as a key liquidity driver, trading more than 764,000 shares and closing at GH¢6.52. Its consistent activity continues to provide depth to the market, particularly within the ICT segment.

Elsewhere in the financial space, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated experienced a slight dip, closing at GH¢2.24 from GH¢2.32, highlighting mixed sentiment within banking stocks despite the broader upward trend. Meanwhile, SIC Insurance Company PLC recorded modest gains, rising to GH¢4.81 from GH¢4.58, reflecting sustained investor interest in insurance equities.

In the energy and commodities segment, GOIL PLC posted marginal gains within the GH¢7.95–8.00 range, while TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC remained largely flat around GH¢34.55. Conversely, Benso Oil Palm Plantation PLC declined to GH¢85.86 from GH¢89.99, indicating profit-taking following previous price rallies.

Overall, the market has maintained a consistent upward trajectory throughout the week, building on Monday’s levels of 14,332.79 points and GH¢272.08 billion in market capitalisation. This steady climb reflects improving sentiment and sustained accumulation in key counters.

Nonetheless, the structure of the rally points to a more measured phase of growth. Gains are increasingly concentrated in a handful of liquid, high-value stocks rather than being broadly distributed across the market. This pattern suggests that while confidence is returning, investors remain strategic and selective in their positioning, favouring fundamentally strong equities amid evolving market conditions.
