Morocco Frees Three Senegalese Fans after AFCON Violence Sentence

Morocco on Saturday released three Senegalese football fans who had completed a three-month prison sentence for their involvement in violence during the Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat, an AFP journalist reported.

The trio left Al Arjat 2 prison, located northeast of Rabat, in a police vehicle and were taken to a police station for formal processing before their release.

Outside the station, the three men, visibly relieved and smiling, were received by officials from the Senegalese embassy.

In a brief remark, one of the released fans told AFP: “dima Maroc, dima Maghrib,” meaning “long live Morocco.”

Senegalese defence lawyer Patrick Kabou expressed gratitude to diplomatic and consular authorities for their role in the case. Writing on X, he thanked them for their efforts in supporting the detainees.

On the eve of their release, Kabou also urged the public to support the men as they readjust to life outside prison, noting the emotional impact of their detention.

Meanwhile, 15 other Senegalese supporters remain in custody in connection with the same incident. They are serving sentences ranging from six months to one year, which were upheld on appeal on Monday.
