GTEC Blacklists 62 Tertiary Institution

By Maame Efua Kwaduah
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission(GTEC) has cautioned students, parents and employers to be vigilant against fake or unaccredited academic certificates.
The institution further issued a strong public warning after identifying and describing 62 institutions as unrecognised.
In a statement the Commission stressed that the action forms part of its mandate to protect the credibility of Ghana’s tertiary education system and safeguard the public from misleading or fraudulent academic qualifications.
According to GTEC, the listed institutions include universities, colleges and seminaries operating both within Ghana and abroad, many of which have been flagged for failing to meet accreditation standards or for operating without proper authorisation.

GTEC indicated that the inclusion of both local and international institutions reflects growing concerns over the proliferation of unregulated academic entities operating under questionable credentials.
The Commission did not provide detailed breakdowns of violations for each institution but noted that the majority either lack recognised accreditation or fail to meet Ghana’s academic quality standards.
The Commission warned that individuals who have already enrolled in or graduated from any of the listed institutions may face serious consequences.
Their certificates may not be accepted for further studies, professional licensing or employment within Ghana, particularly in the public sector.
Employers have also been urged to carry out thorough verification of academic credentials before hiring, especially when qualifications originate from unfamiliar or unaccredited institutions.
GTEC further advised prospective students to always confirm the accreditation status of any institution through its official channels before enrolling, stressing that due diligence is essential to avoid financial loss and academic disappointment.
The Commission reaffirmed that the notice takes immediate effect as part of ongoing efforts to maintain integrity, transparency and credibility within Ghana’s tertiary education system.
