AngloGold Ashanti Pledges Continued STEM Investment in Obuasi

AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to youth development and innovation, following the successful completion of its maiden STEM Bootcamp in Obuasi, where the company stressed that investing in science and technology education is central to building a sustainable future for mining communities and Ghana as a whole.
Speaking at the grand finale of the five-day programme, Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Edmund Oduro Agyei, said the initiative reflects the company’s broader vision of “empowering people and advancing societies” through practical and future-oriented education.
He explained that rapid advancements in technology across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and communication make it essential to equip young people with relevant digital and scientific skills to remain competitive in a changing global economy.
“Empowering young people with relevant skills in innovation and technology is essential to building a sustainable future for Obuasi and beyond,” he said.
The STEM Bootcamp brought together 36 pupils from eight basic school STEM clubs across the Obuasi East and Obuasi Municipalities. Over the five-day training period, participants were introduced to hands-on learning experiences designed to build foundational competencies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
At the final exhibition, students showcased practical projects developed during the programme, demonstrating their understanding of coding, robotics, electronics, mechanical engineering, 3D design, computational thinking, and creative problem-solving.
The event was attended by traditional leaders, education officials, parents, and community stakeholders, all of whom witnessed the innovations presented by the pupils and commended the quality of work produced within a short training period.
The initiative forms part of AngloGold Ashanti’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan, which prioritises education, skills development, and community empowerment as key pillars of its social investment strategy in Obuasi.
According to organisers, the bootcamp also helped improve participants’ communication and presentation abilities, enabling them to confidently articulate their ideas and innovations during the final showcase.
The programme builds on the company’s Robotics Training Centre, commissioned on July 11, 2025, which is currently the first facility of its kind in the Ashanti Region. The centre is expected to serve as a long-term hub for practical STEM education and innovation.
The Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, George Alfred Koomson, commended AngloGold Ashanti for the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that strengthens STEM education at the basic level and supports Ghana’s broader push for science and digital literacy.
He noted that such programmes are critical in developing problem-solving abilities and creativity among students at an early stage of their education.
AngloGold Ashanti has also called for stronger collaboration with stakeholders to expand STEM opportunities across the region, noting that sustained investment in education and innovation could position Obuasi as a leading centre for youth-driven technological development.
With the maiden edition completed, organisers say the STEM Bootcamp has laid a strong foundation for nurturing future innovators and strengthening the pipeline of skilled young talent in Ghana’s mining communities and beyond.
