DR Congo Declares Public Holiday to Celebrate World Cup Qualification
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has declared Wednesday, April 1, 2026, a nationwide public holiday to celebrate its national team’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an official statement, the government described the achievement as a “historic qualification” for the Leopards, marking a significant milestone for football in the country. The Ministry of Employment and Labour announced that the day would be observed as a paid public holiday across the country.
“Following the historic qualification of the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the 2026 World Cup, the public is hereby informed that Wednesday, April 1, 2026, is declared a public holiday and a paid day off nationwide,” the statement said.
The Leopards secured their place at the tournament after a dramatic victory over Jamaica in the World Cup play-off. Defender Axel Tuanzebe scored the decisive goal in the 100th minute, breaking the deadlock after sustained pressure throughout regulation time.
The late strike sparked jubilant scenes among Congolese supporters at Estadio Guadalajara, who had watched nervously as their side battled Jamaica’s resistance.
The qualification marks DR Congo’s first appearance at the World Cup since 1974, when the nation then known as Zaire endured a difficult campaign, losing all three matches and finishing with a goal difference of minus 14.
The team has been drawn into Group K, where they will face Colombia, Portugal, and Uzbekistan.
Meanwhile, Iraq also secured qualification after a 2–1 victory over Bolivia in another play-off fixture, marking their first World Cup appearance since 1986.
The Leopards’ triumph has sparked widespread celebrations across DR Congo, with many citizens viewing the achievement as a major boost to national pride and the country’s global sporting profile.
